The Bad Beginning
The Bad Beginning, by Lemony Snicket,has 216 pages and starts the tales of the Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny . At the start the orphans` parents died in a terrible fire that destroyed their house. As their parent`s wish they are sent to their closest relative in the city, Count Olaf. Later on they discover that he plans to steal their fortune by marrying Violet but is thwarted. Count Olaf gets away and the orphans have to be sent to a new guardian. A character trait of Count Olaf is that he perseveres to get the enormous fortune of the Baudelaire orphans.
The author clearly states that Count Olaf would do anything to steal the Baudelaire fortune. In The Bad Beginning, count Olaf plans to steal the Baudelaire fortune by making Violet, the oldest Baudelaire his wife. He enters a play with a judge to marry them. Unbeknownst to them, when the sign a document bonding them in legal marriage it turns out to be a real document. This whole scheme shows that Count Olaf is willing make an elaborate and complex plan to steal the fortune right under the noses of the people.
This book`s plot is similar to other plots of The Series of Unfortunate Events. In The Reptile Room Count Olaf uses a scheme to try to take the fortune of the Baudelaire Orphans. This time he plans on using a trip to the jungles of Peru to Elude the authorities and raise one of the orphans to the age of 18 to inherit the fortune. Like in The Bad Beginning, he uses an elaborate scheme to fool the people and get rich.
